All Children Are Artists

By declan | January 21, 2008

Yes, D2, all children are artists. But then they grow up. They say we’re all geniuses, and then we’re educated. John Moriarty, the late great Kerry mystic once said, I got my Ph. D. in Canada, and then I came back to a cottage in Connemara for my education. In their 40s, 2% of men and women are highly creative. Same in their 30s.But at age 5, 90% of children are highly creative. Between 5 and 8, 80% of us who are highly creative develop picture or an image that we are not. In business today, creativity is what matters. New ideas that we put into action. Managers of the past solved problems but managers of the future spot opportunities. Mark Twain said once, “I was a great man to spot an opportunity long after it has passed.”The quiet “blue sky” creative time is important. Wonder, curiosity and imagination.Rumi said, “sell your cleverness and purchase bewilderment!”

    Dear Declan,

so good to hear your lines on creativity. It very well fits into the work you are doing.

Children are creative because they enjoy the moment. They like to do what they do right in that minute they are doing it. The goal, the results or the outcome of their work is very close and not an uncertain annual company target.
Childern grow when they are creative because it builds their skills. This is something we often forget.

    Keep it Up

    Mike

    Dear Declan ,

I am in awe as always and through hiccups or modesty ( yours) I have just found your site.

Who is quoted to have said ‘the child is the father of the man’.
I have found this to be very true. Where is it that grown ups in the business world ( and many others ) forget the drive and creativity they once felt. Some hang on tight to it yet others forget they ever had it ?

    Helen
